citizen librarianship

I am writing this from the Digital Library Federations Fall Forum 2007. After the keynote on the emergence of the citizen journalist by Dan Gillmor from the Center for Citizen Media John Mark Ockerbloom pointed at the emergence of the Citizen Librarian as something that has an impact on librarianship in a similar fashion to the journalist. While I see his analogy with the emergence of Librarything and my library in Google Books. I am a big fan of these services and therefore I borrowed this turn of phrase to launch this blog.

This is a quite compelling topic. Why is there a desire from the masses to create metadata?
